Welcome to David Getz Creative!
My name is David Getz, and for my entire life, I have tried to see the world through creative-colored glasses. From the way I approach my job (I direct the orchestra at Morton High School) to the way I mow my lawn (I try to do a different pattern every time), I try to think how I can work hard at having fun.
Creativity is hard to define, but you always know it when you see it. I built this website to demonstrate how creativity influences three important areas of my life. As a music educator, conductor, and composer, I try to innovate creative solutions to my daily tasks for the betterment of my students. I believe students are at their best when they are engaged with their most creative selves, and I want to model what that looks like on a daily basis.
Creativity is not always about a product; it’s about a perspective. I have created a lot of things over the years, but I don’t feel that that is what defines me as a creative individual. When I premiere one of my compositions for an audience, it’s very easy for the audience to say, “How creative!” Yet when we learn that a student in our community scored a perfect score on the ACT, we say “How smart!” I feel that we have dug too deep of a ditch between the two meanings of those words. Creativity is not always about a product, it’s about a way to look at the world.
Creativity is a journey, and it’s always an adventure. Beginning in 2017, I began to seriously study the science behind creativity and inspiration. I have read many books and listened to hours of podcast content and YouTube videos to glean as much as I can from those who have taken this journey before me. In future blog posts, I will be sharing some of my favorites.
In the meantime, please feel free to look around my site and see if anything strikes your inspirational fancy. I look forward to using this blog as a platform to share my creative perspectives, and I would love to connect with other individuals (educators or otherwise) who enjoy dialoguing within this subject matter.
